My work

Synthesis Project:

As part of the coursework at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation we devised and implemented a comprehensive monitoring plan for a specific species or taxa. Next, we were tasked with developing and action plan and communication strategy based on our data. This project culminated in a final report and an hour long public presentation of our findings

My group chose to zero in on seed-eating passerine species and how they respond to different land managment practices. Attached is a copy of our final report.

Grant Proposal:

Another assignment during my semester with the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation was to produce an original grant proposal on a real conservation topic. These proposals were then reviewed by a panel of students so that we could experience both sides of the funding process.

Attached is my proposal for an ecological study on the effect of elk populations, recently reintroduced to Virginia, on native grassland habitat and forest succession.

Visual Essay:

Part of the coursework at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation was a weekly practicum where each student got to shadow a conservation proffesional and gain valuable work experience. The final assignment for our practicum was to convey what we learned through a video.

My practicum was with a forest researcher at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institue, and it was focused on the role of oak trees in eastern deciduous forests. For my visual essay I chose to create a humerous and informative video about oaks.
